It feels fitting that I came to the library to write this post to reveal the cover of my new book! I love to think about the millions and millions of books that exist in the world. All of those people who were brave enough to write and share their stories. All of those readers, swapping stories of ordinary and extraordinary lives.

When you listen to interviews of authors releasing new books, you often hear this question: Why did you write this book?

For me the answer is simple: I didn’t have a choice.

Maybe it sounds a little woo-woo, but these words found me. I started writing many of these essays in 2020, when I was home alone in a brand new house as a brand new wife who was, quite literally, scared for my life. When I started writing, I didn’t know where these words would land. I didn’t have a full vision or a title or an outline—at all.

It wasn’t until late 2023 when I challenged myself to find the larger story in all of these stories. I started to see threads of how it all connected.

In this post, I shared my hesitancies in telling you that I wrote a book about motherhood. Why did that feel so scary, and dare I say it, shameful? Because I started writing these essays when I wasn’t a mom. There’s nothing “self-helpy” or “how-to” about what I’ve written. If anything, I’ve given you far more questions than answers. I wandered around our new empty house, dreaming of a life that felt completely out of reach. For a long time, I didn’t let myself imagine the sounds of crying babies or baseball games in the backyard.

So that’s why I knew I needed to share this book with you. It’s for anyone who has ever wrestled with the beauty and the pain in this world—and dares to find a touch of humor to give us a little boost like we’re floating up on a balloon.
